Cole Barnes Steps Up To The Plate

Ashley (23-4) continued their impressive form from the regular season into the playoffs with a nail biting 3-2 performance in the 4th round over the Pinecrest Patriots (24-5) on Friday. This win extended their winning streak to 7 games. Ashley has been on a hot streak lately, winning 9 of their last 10 games and boosting their confidence going into the final four of the 4A NCHSAA playoffs.

Junior Cole Barnes showcased his versatility both on the mound and at the plate. He pitched 9 innings, conceding just 2 earned runs off 10 hits, and also contributed offensively by scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Barnes has been a consistent performer, pitching no less than 6 innings in his last 3 outings. Barnes has been popping off this season, having a batting average of .250, an on base percentage of .351, a fielding percentage of 1.000, and totaling 11 RBI's.

Contributions weren't limited to Barnes, as 4 Ashley players recorded at least one hit. Junior Will Hartzell also stood out, scoring a run and reaching base in 3 of his 4 plate appearances.

Despite the loss, Pinecrest's junior Mitch Baek had a strong performance at bat, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. Although Pinecrest registered 11 strikeouts, Ashley's resilience secured the win.

Conversely, Pinecrest's defeat halted their 6 game streak of away wins, bringing their record to 24-5.

Next up, Ashley will look to maintain their momentum in the playoffs against Cardinal Gibbons on Tuesday, while Pinecrest will regroup following their loss.
