Next Up: NCHSAA 3A state championship on Friday

With a remarkable unblemished record, Central Cabarrus (32-0) continued their march in the 2024 NCHSAA Men’s Basketball Championship playoffs. Central Cabarrus dashed Hickory’s perfect season hopes with a conclusive score of 87-78, marking Hickory's third loss in two years.

Reflecting on the intense matchup, Central Cabarrus Coach Jim Baker said:

“That was a great high school basketball game. It was two trains and we just collided. I thought one time we had them on the ropes and they got a couple stick backs and slowed the flood gates a little. But I’m proud of my guys. I’ve got some dogs and...they love each other and they love to compete. This game at one point could’ve gone either way.”

The game showcased stellar performances from both sides, delivering an electrifying contest for fans. Central Cabarrus's robust defense forced the Red Tornadoes into 13 turnovers, while their offense surged in the second half.

Senior Desmond Kent Jr. emerged as a force with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 blocks, igniting a fierce competition. Carson Daniel (Sr) complemented the effort with 22 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 1 block, contributing significantly to Central Cabarrus's 64th consecutive victory.

As the defending state champions, Central Cabarrus is set to face Fayetteville’s Seventy-First in Friday’s final, scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. tip-off at Joel Coliseum.
