Fulghum Credits Defensive Strengths of Teammates

The North Duplin Rebels stormed into the 2nd round of the 2024 NCHSAA Softball State Championship - 1A playoffs with determination, facing off against the Pender Patriots in a showdown that ended with a resounding 10-2 victory. Eager for more success, the Rebels now set their sights on the 3rd round, scheduled for Monday against East Columbus at 7:00 PM.

In their clash with the Patriots, North Duplin showcased several standout performances, none more impressive than that of sophomore pitcher Lilly Fulghum. Fulghum displayed remarkable skill on the mound, pitching a full 7 innings while allowing just 2 earned runs on 2 hits. She also struck out 8 batters. Not content with her pitching prowess alone, Fulghum also made her mark in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with a home run, two triples, and three runs.

Reflecting on the game, Fulghum expressed: “My defense was on fire! It makes you feel good as a pitcher when you have a great defense behind you and an amazing offensive team too. We stay in the REBEL bubble and play hard, have fun, and win the day."

Joining Fulghum in the offensive onslaught was senior Reece Outlaw, who went 3-for-5, contributed 2 RBI, a double, scored a run, and stole 2 bases, proving to be a formidable force in securing the Rebels' victory. Sara Thomas Tucker also played a crucial role, scoring a run and reaching base in three of her four plate appearances.

The upcoming 3rd round promises more excitement for North Duplin as they prepare to face East Columbus at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, playing in front of their home fans with high hopes of continuing their winning streak in the playoffs.
