The North Mecklenburg men's basketball team (29-3) clinched a hard-fought victory over Lake Norman (28-3) in overtime, securing a final score of 65-61.

Senior Isaiah Evans delivered yet another stellar performance, guiding the Vikings to their 5th state championship appearance. Evans showcased his skills with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and five steals. His crucial free throws in the final 6.8 seconds of overtime, coupled with a tough layup over Lake Norman's 6-foot-10 center Trent Steinour, propelled the Vikings to a two-point lead and ultimately sealed the victory.

Junior Chadlyn Traylor, a sought-after Power 5 recruit, contributed 13 points, five rebounds, four assists, one block, and one steal. Playing a significant 35 out of 36 minutes, Traylor also showcased his shooting prowess by making 3-of-6 three-point attempts.

Reflecting on the game, Coach Duane Lewis stated:

“We knew it would be a tough game. We talked all year long. You get to the Final Four, final eight, of the state in public school 4A basketball, or any basketball, all the teams are really good. We had the highest respect for Lake Norman. They have some really good players.”

The Vikings will battle against the New Hanover Wildcats (32-0) on Saturday at 7:30 PM for the 2024 NCHSAA Men’s Basketball 4A State Championship game.
